Ingredients: |
| 8 |
3 lb. of tart apples (Jonathans or Granny Smiths are best.)
1/4 pound of butter (one stick)
1 cup brown sugar (white will also work)
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
vanilla ice cream |
| Directions: |
- Peel and slice apples.
- As you peel and slice each apple, cover in water with a little lemon juice so they don't turn brown.
|
- After the apples are sliced, drain and slowly mix in the sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Taste while adding the sugar and spices and adjust to your taste.
|
- Melt a stick of butter in a large skillet over medium to medium high heat.
- Add the apples. Stir enough so that they cook evenly, but not so much as to break them.
- Some juice should form in the skillet as they cook. If they seem dry or you think they might burn, add a little water. However, that is usually not necessary. Cover the pan towards the end.
|
- They are done as soon as the apple slices are tender and can be pierced with a fork and don't taste crunchy. Don't cook them too long or you will have apple sauce.
|
- Spoon over vanilla ice cream
|
- You can also mix in some raisons, pecans, or sprinkle some granola cereal on top at the end of the cooking period.
